Curtiss Hall and Groening Commons Dedicated

1997

Charles Curtiss Curtiss Hall, the branch of West Complex that houses employee offices, was officially dedicated on April 16, 1997. This building was named for Charles B. Curtiss, a member of the original group of community members who founded SVSU.

On May 16, 1997 Groening Commons,William Groening which is the atrium of West Complex, was dedicated. It is named after William A. Groening, a member of the group that worked to create both SVSU and Delta College. He also served as the first chairman of the SVSU Board of Control. Groening Commons encompasses the mezzanine and entryways to both the Performing Arts Theatre and the Rhea E. Miller Recital Hall.

Also during this busy year, Congressman James A. Barcia, perhaps SVSU's most famous graduate, returned to his alma mater on March 17, 1997 to lead political science classes in a "professor for a day" program. Barcia was a former student government president at SVSU and a 1974 graduate, he is currently the senator from Michigan's 5th District.
